Director Lucio Fulci has been recently  rediscovered by film directors and late night New York City movie viewers as an underappreciated genius.  These accolades are undeserving, but "Zombie" is a lot of fun, and its thrills aren't as dated as one would expect.  The transfer from Anchor Bay is first-rate in every conceivable manner.  The picture is in great shape, in spite of the fact that it never looked terrific in theatrical showings.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound isn't filled with directional effects as much as we would have liked, however, it provides numerous moments of surprises.

Certainly one of Director Larry Cohen's better films, Q:The Winged Serpent, is now available from Anchor Bay on DVD.  No real extras here, but the film, about a dragon-like Aztec monser killing in Manhattan, feels original.  The actors, including Law & Order's Michael Moriarty, are excellent, and truly raise the quality of the film.  The transfer is generally fine, but there are a few spots wherein the picture feels murky.  The Stereo sound feels monaural for most of the film.

Vigilante borrows from the best and worst of "spaghetti revenge thrillers" as well as "American revenge thrillers", eg. "Death Wish".  Robert Forster stars and Fred Williamson offer some entertaining moments, and while they chew the scenery most of the time, it's great fun.  The plot, a good cop is victimized by a street gang, and thereby seeks revenge, is wholly unoriginal. But, then, so are most of the similar films shown on cable.  "Vigilante" is at least much more fun.   Anchor Bay has pulled out all the stops for their DVD release.  The image on this transfer is quite sharp considering the low budget feel of the film, fleshtones are consistently perfect, as is the contrast.  There's even a surprisingly effective Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack.  Other features include audio commentary with Lustig,Forster,Williamson and Frank Pesce. There are also stills, theatrical trailer & t.v. spots.
