THE YARDS-
BUENA VISTA has released the overlooked crime-drama, "THE YARDS" on
dvd,
complete with extras. Mark Wahlberg stars as Leo, a young man sent to
prison when refusing to rat on his friend/accomplice, Willie, after a
grand theft auto heist. For his reward, Willie gives him a job at a
subway repair company run by the newest member of his family, Frank,
played incredibly by James Caan. In spite of warnings about Willie,
Leo ends up getting involved with the secretive aspects of the job,
involving the routine sabotage of other companies bidding for contracts.
This eventually leads to a tragedy involving a killing, which Leo is
wrongly blamed for. Ellen Burstyn and Charlize Theron are excellent as
the women behind him.
Although "THE YARDS" has its share of flaws, mostly to do with
editing, it's still captivating. Even though the material has been used
many times before, there's something new about Director James Gray's
approach, making it stand up, even after repeated viewings.
Unfortunately, BUENA VISTA has fallen short with the visual quality of this
transfer. The color palatte is extremely dull here, and the image
often appears muted. While Director Gray say's this visual design was
intended, and it does give the film a certain "noir" feel, it also
drains the viewer along with the composition!
The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundmix isn't overly aggressive, but it's very
good! It offers an atmospheric soundstage that takes the viewer into this
gritty world with "gritty" street sounds.
BUENA VISTA has included a commentary with Director James Gray. He's candid, likeable, and passionate about the film. He touches on the production, but also on filmmaking in general. While it has few gaps here and there, it's never dull.
There's a trailer and featurette as well.
