Occasionally, a sequel to a horror film ends up being much better than the original film. Such was the case with "THE HILLS HAVE EYES 2," the "remake" version, that is. Such is also the case with the direct to dvd/blu-ray sequel to "WRONG TURN," titled,..."WRONG TURN 2," now available on blu-ray from FOX.  In some surprise casting, and perhaps demonstrating the increased budget, Kimberly Caldwell appears(briefly)as the first of many victims to the mutant cannibals inhabiting the series.  After  making a "wrong turn" as soon as the film starts, while driving to start her role as a contestant on the reality series, "ULTIMATE SURVIVAL," being filmed in the less visited areas of West Virginia.  After a mutant hillbilly is hit by her car, Kimberly runs out to check on him, and immediately becomes lunch to it and another mutant sibling from the woods. However, the series she was heading to is still starting, hosted by a former marine, whom sets up the the game's requirements, allowing for the cast of characters/contestants to be introduced. To say these characters are simply caricatures, is overcomplicating things. Of course, there's the promiscuous girl( essential to any slasher/horror film), the goth girl, jock, and so on. All of them are two-dimensional characters, laid out as props for the savagery certain to come. The survival setting attempts to be a tie-in of sorts to the redneck mutants' unsophisticated manner of hunting their prey, bow and arrows, axes, and other woodsman-like tools of the trade.  Fans of the first film or gross-out films of that nature won't be disappointed, and certainly go into a film like this without the highest expectations. There are attempts at dark humor, and some of these actually work in a disturbing, unlikeable kind of way, but which still separates it from many of the films of this genre. And, "WRONG TURN 2" in terms of budget and technical aspects, plays out more successfully than its predecessor.

Shot on video, "WRONG TURN 2" doesn't look any better on blu-ray than "WRONG TURN" looks in the same format.  the 1.85:1 aspect ratio is intact for this 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 blu-ray.  Detail is typically not much better than dvd, as Digital Noise Reduction tends to present duller quality. While there are moments with impressive depth, the majority of the film appears flat. Contrast is slightly better than the previous film, with better definition in darker scenes. Colors are still typically restrained.

FOX has provided a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix. While we're excited to find FOX is sticking with this superior lossy mix format, it's always going to be limited by the source material. And, "WRONG TURN 2" doesn't offer the level of surround activity found on its predecessor. Surrounds occasionally pop up with decent fidelity, but this is mostly a front channel mix. Separation effects delegated to the front are engaging, but these are utilized less than one would expect for this kind of thriller. Dialogue is always intelligible and with fine dynamic range.

FOX has included some extras, including a surprisingly fun commentary with the director and two actors.

Another commentary with the film's writers is provided, is ok, but is only worthwhile for aspiring low-budget horror film scribes.

The other featurettes, from two to 11 minutes, focus on the gore, behind-the-scenes footage and casting, and are presented in standard resolution.
