"WHEN IN ROME," has been released on blu-ray by BUENA VISTA. It's a romantic comedy, certain to please most girls, while leaving most male viewers rolling their eyes and annoyed, particularly during its last 30 minutes. Kristen Bell is an event planner for a gallery, and she has no life outside of work. While attending her sister's wedding in Rome, upset at one letdown after another, Beth gets drunk, goes over to the fountain and picks up some change, thrown into it previously by those hoping their wishes in finding love will come true. What Beth doesn't realize is that by picking up the coins, she's set a magical cascade into motion. For the duration of the film, those who had thrown the coins that are now in her possession, come under a spell, making her the entire object of their desire. Silly? Yes! Could the premise to "WHEN IN ROME" still somehow make for an entertaining movie? Maybe, if (god forbid it gets remade into something better than what is offered here!)
"WHEN IN ROME" is honestly painful for most reasonably intelligent viewers to sit through. The reason for its failure has little to do with its ridiculous plot, but, rather the direction, dialogue, inane characters, and sluggish pacing! Even at 91 minutes, it feels much, much longer!
But, for those who somehow found "BRIDE WARS" and films like that entertaining, "WHEN IN ROME" while worse, isn't that much worse.
BUENA VISTA has provided the correct 2.40:1 aspect ratio for this AVC MPEG-4 1080p blu-ray. Although tint, especially with fleshtones, is pushed to unnatural limits in spots, colors are rich. Black levels are deep and contrast is impressive. The image generally looks good, although nothing too creative or dazzling about what's on display here.
A DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix provided is mostly front-center focused. Minor ambient effects kick in occasionally, but surrounds are utilized mainly to enhance the forgettable score.
Various extras, including an alternate opening and ending, making the film even worse, are provided, in 1080p.
Featurettes, deleted scenes, bloopers and more are also included, in 1080p.
