Jean Reno has been great playing in American films. He can convey a lot through simple facial expressions and mannerisms, acting!  He's also a good tough guy, wherein he can get away with saying little.  "WASABI" is a French action film, written by Luc Besson, and while it has more dialogue than most American Action films, it's great fun, and Reno is wonderful in it.

Reno is Hubert, a really tough cop, never too concerned about pissing off someone. When his actions cause the Chief of Police's son to get knocked unconscious, he's made to take a lengthy vacation.  Through certain circumstances, Hubert ends up in Japan, where he ends up with a partner named Momo. Momo is hilarious, and the comedy that ensues from this relationship is much more realistic and side-splitting than what was achieved in either of the "RUSH HOUR" films.  .

While there's plenty of humor, this is an "action" film, and there's plenty of that too!  Some of it's predictable, but it doesn't stop "WASABI" from remaining entertaining throughout.

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has preserved the film's 2.35:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9 enhancement.  The image is wonderful!  Colors are incredibly vibrant, and there's great depth in every scene.  Contrast is excellent as well, with deep blacks and grays, providing stunning definition in dark scenes.  Fleshtones appear natural.

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has provided the original French Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, as well as a dubbed English Dolby Digital 5.1 mix.  The French mix is great, offering plenty of sweeping effects throughout the film, and certain to give any subwoofer a real workout.  There are numerous directional effects in the front soundstage, and dialogue is always intelligible, in spite of multi-layered effects.

The dubbed version is horrible. It's just not well done, by any standard..
