MAGNOLIA FILMS has released the anthology-gangster film, "TRIANGLE" on dvd. Tsui Hark got two other Hong Kong Directors to join him in making this experimental film, blending their unique narrative styles for the individual portions of the film they've taken on. The plot builds around three guys, all strapped for cash, deciding to take part in a heist. What should've been a simple plot becomes overly complicated, drawing even more attention to the simpler, dumbed down areas of the plot elsewhere. The first third of the film really starts things off in a stalled fashion. Director Tsui Hark utilizes fast editing and camerawork in operatic fashion, but it can't overcome sloppy writing. Johnnie To does the best job at directing, utilizing style and a more accessible pace, that enhances the narrative to his segment, rather than simply masking it. While Ringo Lam's last segment is somewhat unique in its execution, it's none-the-less confusing and leaves Johnnie To a lot to have to make sense of, which to To's credit, he pulls off! "TRIANGLE" feels like a nearly "really" good film, more akin to "THINGS TO DO IN DENVER WHEN YOU'RE DEAD" than "PULP FICTION." But, it's still entertaining to watch, if not completely memorable.
MAGNOLIA FILMS has provided the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio for this 16:9 enhanced dvd. Colors vary in their intensity. Sometimes, they look perfect, but, often they appear restrained. Grain appears sporadically, but isn't too intrusive. Detail is generally impressive. Contrast is decent, although the darkest scenes fail to retain depth in comparison to many superior MAGNOLIA releases.
MAGNOLIA FILMS has provided the Cantonese 5.1 mix as well as an English dubbed 5.1 mix. The dubbing is surprisingly better than we'd expected, but the original mix is vastly superior in its presentation. While not an aggressive mix, surrounds kick in with great impact during key sequences. Dialogue is always intelligible and the music is well balanced throughout. Fidelity is consistently impressive.
Two featurettes, comprised of behind-the-scenes footage and interviews, have been included.
