“TOY STORY 2” was originally released 4 years after the first film. The story picks up with Andy heading off to summer camp, leaving his toys behind to get into plenty of mischief. While “TOY STORY” evoked a sense of nostalgia in older viewers for the innocence and imagination of their youth, “TOY STORY 2” deals more with the pangs associated with nostalgia and of what getting older, typically means. Woody’s damaged arm has left him delegated to the highest shelf in Andy’s room. However, when Woody observes a beloved friend, Wheezy the Penguin, is about to be carted off in a yard sale, he runs to the rescue. Unfortunately, a selfish toy collector sees Woody and snags him as part of his priceless western themed 4 figure collection. While Woody befriends and grows to care for his 3 fellow partners, he has to choose between becoming part of priceless nostalgia, or trying to return to Andy. At the same time, Buzz has concocted a rescue scheme.
There are many preferring “TOY STORY 2” to the original. Girls, in particular, obviously enjoy the idea of Jessie the Yodeling Cowgirl, getting a fair amount of screen time. However, while enjoying much of “TOY STORY 2,” this reviewer still prefers the original. That’s not to say “TOY STORY 2” isn’t great entertainment. It’s GREAT! But, there is still a zany kind of constant surprise to the original, that’s not as consistent in its sequel.
DISNEY has provided the correct 1.78:1 aspect ratio for this MVC MPEG-4 1080p blu-ray. While “TOY STORY” holds its own and certainly utilized then-current computer technology with incredible results, 4 years of technology can sure make a difference. “TOY STORY 2” dazzles the viewer in terms of its computerized animation to a higher degree than the original, repeatedly. And, the “3d” version dazzles more notably so. Whether looking at the attack on a fortress in the film’s exciting opening sequence, or dodging obstacles while running through a busy airport, “TOY STORY 2” makes wonderful use of “3d” in bringing the viewer deeper into its world than the 2d version could, due to the increased depth of virtually every angle!!! As with the blu-ray3d image of the first film, ghosting rarely pops up, and is never intrusive. Colors are just as bold and, but detail is close to flawless! It’s hard to imagine “TOY STORY 2” could ever look better than it does here on blu-ray(2d), unless looking at the even more stellar blu-ray3d image, provided here! WOW!
From the 1st few seconds of the rousing opening, the audience finds itself immersed within a mix that almost makes that of the first film seem tame. One will definitely want to carefully monitor the bass levels if neighbors are easily perturbed. Loaded with an array of distinctive, sensational effects, all speakers are featured prominently and seldom get rest. The dialogue is always crystal clear and perfectly balanced along with the music as well. A FLAWLESS MIX!!!
Along with the voluminous extras carried over(standard resolution)from the previous dvd presentation, and the same commentary, 6 new brief HD featurettes are also included.
