Tootsie-
COLUMBIA TRISTAR HOME VIDEO has finally released the long awaited "TOOTSIE".  While I'm not a big fan of the film myself, it's well loved by many and has actually made the American Film Institute's list of the "Top 100 American Films" of all time!
The film's certainly not bad, but for it to make the list and films like
"Shawshank Redemption" to be excluded, is insulting.  While it can be
argued that "Tootsie" isn't striving to be the dramatic film that
"Shawshank" is, but it' s not even a well-crafted film.
Dustin Hoffman plays Michael Dorsey, a gifted actor, whom just can't get a decent role!  He's so "into" his craft, he annoys other actors and
talent.  Frustrated, he disguises himself as a woman to try out for a
big role, and wins the part!  The rest of the film focuses on Dorsey's
having to switch between his real identity and the one he's assumed at
pivotal moments.  While there are some thought-provoking issues brought up, they're only glossed over.  There's no real substance here.
However, there are some remarkable performances!  Hoffman, Jessica
Lange, and Bill Murray really stand out and it's a shame they aren't
given more to work with.  The problematic script was completed after
many "uncredited" writers gave it a shot.  It's also a shame that the
commentary and other extras offered on the Criterion Special Edition
laserdisc, detailing the complicated quest for a decent script, hasn't
been included here.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has preserved the film's original aspect ratio of 2.35:1 with 16:9 enhancement.  A pan&scan version is also offered on the alternate side, but Cinematographer Owen Roizmann has created some wonderful compositions that deserve to be seen in their entirety and the letterboxed format is the only presentation that preserves it.
The transfer is generally sharp, although it doesn't offer the high
degree of definition as many other COLUMBIA TRISTAR releases.  Color values are decent, but they appear more subdued than in typical COLUMBIA TRISTAR releases. Fleshtones appear natural throughout.  There is some minor grain infrequently throughout the film.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR deserves credit for offering both the original monaural soundtrack as well as a newly created dolby digital 5.1 mix.  While the 5.1 mix stretches the front soundstage, allowing for some minor separation across the front speakers, there are no surround effects.
The dialogue is always intelligible and free of distortion.
Trailers for Groundhog Day, Hook and Ghostbusters are included.
