SRP $24.98 1.85:1(16:9) DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 COLUMBIA TRISTAR

"TOMCATS" aspires to be a sort of "PORKY'S" for the millenium.  And, to be honest director/writer Gregory Poirier's proven talent made it at least seem feasible for "TOMCATS" to be better than most teen-oriented comedies.  Unfortunately, there's almost nothing funny or unpredictable in the film.  It's raunchy like "PORKY'S" but never even comes close to being as funny as that film.  Not that "PORKY'S" was great entertainment, but it plays like "DR. STRANGELOVE" compared to this film!

The opening sequence, involving a stupid gag around a "VIAGRA" joke, wherein drinkers of the substance all sport unseemly erections in tight tuxedos, is a perfect example of what the film aspires to. By the way, that's the best gag the film has to offer!   The plot involves a bunch of immature friends who throw money into a pot, making a bet that the last one to remain a bachelor gets the jackpot.  The film jumps ahead years later, and we learn the pot has grown to a large amount.  The two bachelors left, Jake Busey and Jerry O' Connell, are equally unlikeable, but due to a big gambling debt owed to Vegas boss, Bill Maher, makes O' Connell decide to try harder than ever to get Busey to fall in love and marry.  He gets a girl from the past, Shannon Elizabeth, to try trapping his competitor, promising her half the jackpot.  In another horribly predictable scene, we meet Elizabeth as Busey mistakes her for a prostitute! She's actually an undercover cop! What hilarity!

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has provided the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio for this release, with 16:9 enhancement.  The image is pretty sharp, with vibrant colors and natural fleshtones. There's no grain anywhere and contrast is fine.

The DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 soundmix is adequate, although lacking in surround use, except when boosting the musical score.  Dialogue is well focused and always intelligible.

The theatrical trailer as well as ones for "JERRY MAGUIRE", "JOE DIRT" and "SAVING SILVERMAN" are also featured.
