TIN MEN

BUENA VISTA has released “TIN MEN” on dvd.  As with many Levinson films,  this one’s set in his hometown of Baltimore in the ‘60s.  Richard Dreyfuss and Danny DeVito play two aluminum siding salesmen, whom are bent on destroying one another, after Dreyfuss accidentally runs into DeVito’s car.

These two will stop at nothing to hurt one another, and they don’t care what innocent victims are taken along with them.  Barbara Hershey, in a great performance, plays the wife of DeVito, and it’s actually quite unsettling to see her being used by Dreyfuss in his attempt to hurt DeVito.  Still, the line DeVito shouts, after hearing of Dreyfuss’ conquest with her, is hilarious!

Like all of Levinson’s films, there’s a great sense of nostalgia taking place throughout the film, and it’s not just for the location, but the era as well. “TIN MEN” is a terrific film! It has some flaws, particularly in its anti-climatic ending, but it’s a powerful film, with many unforgettable scenes, and equally unforgettable characters.

BUENA VISTA has preserved the film’s 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement.  The image, while imperfect, still offers great detail for the most part.  It suffers at time from appearing too soft, but colors are solid and fleshtones appear natural.  Contrast is suitable, but lacking in the deep blacks and grays of other fine BUENA VISTA releases.

The film’s soundmix is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 surround.  Since this is a dialogue-driven film, surrounds are rarely utilized, but the front soundstage has its share of directional effects for atmosphere.

Barry Levinson offers a running commentary along with the film’s cast, producer and costume designer!!!!  While everyone appears to have been taped separately, this is a diverse group, and their insight is always worth hearing, as well as entertaining.

The original trailer is included, as is a deleted scene with commentary, best left on the editing floor.
