SRP $19.98 1.85:1(16:9) MONO COLUMBIA TRISTAR

Almost every one of French Director Francis Veber's films are remade into American films, losing much of their spark along in the process.  "THE TOY" is another remake of a Veber film, but due to the craftsmanship of Director Richard Donner and a decent cast, all is not lost.  Pryor plays a struggling writer who takes a job cleaning the offices of an insensitive tycoon, Jackie Gleason.  When the tycoon's greedy, insensitive son spots Pryor at a toy store, he decides he wants him as his "Toy".  Pryor, upon realizing the money being offered to play "the toy" can't refuse.   It's hard for adults to enjoy the film in spite of Gleason's performance, a buxom beauty and more.  It's just too simple-minded.  The film varies in tone between being sentimental and funny.  It never quite succeeds at either.  Unfortunately, most of the jokes are just too simple and predictable for older adolescents, although 9 and younger will love this.

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has preserved the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio of the film with 16:9 enhancement.  There's great detail and colors are pretty solid, although more subdued than we're used to with COLUMBIA TRISTAR releases.

The monaural soundtrack is pretty dismal, offering limited fidelity.  The dialogue is shrill at times also.
