BUENA VISTA HOME ENTERTAINMENT has just released "TEXAS RANGERS", a western that is every bit as entertaining and good/bad as the best "DAWSON'S CREEK" episodes. In fact, "Dawson" actor James Van Der Beek, stars alongside a bunch of this decade's newest brat pack members. The film takes place around the time of the Civil War, and young Texans are asked to bring civility to the wild west by reforming the "Texas Rangers". Under Steve Miner's direction, the film moves at a rapid pace, never allowing the audience too much time to scratch their heads at the absurdity taking place on screen, but still enjoy the kinetics. It's shot with a MTV style approach, ...quick editing, alluring compositions, and vibrant color schemes. There's not much substance or surprise here, but it manages to entertain enough to recommend at least renting it with the possibility of adding it to your collection.
The theatrical 2.35:1 image has been preserved with 16:9 enhancement. The image is impressive throughout! Colors are vibrant, and there's excellent depth in every single shot. Contrast is fine, with deep blacks and grays, even in dark scenes. Fleshtones appear natural, save for a few instances where the image is intentionally dulled down.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is also excellent, and it's extremely aggressive! Rear speakers get a full workout, there are many bass and LFE effects and the music is boosted through all speakers at just the right moment. This is a near demonstration quality soundmix!
Storyboards for a shoot out sequence as well as for the originally intended opening credit sequence, are included. A brief featurette, "BEHIND THE BADGE" is also included, and offers interviews with cast and crew, but is thoroughly promotional in nature.
