"A Taste of Others" is a intelligent, sometimes daring, comedy about the complexities of relationships. Although the film focuses most of its plot around a starchy businessman named Castella, there are many other relationships and subplots explored. Castella's dull life is turned about after attending a play in which his English instructor has a role. The script takes a thought-provoking look at relationships and how people can affect one another without ever stopping to think about it. While it offers more than its fair share of hilarious moments, its message is real and poignant. It's due to the fine direction that the various relationships explored never seem to be cumbersome or confusing, and while audiences are certain to want to revisit this film down the road, it will be due to its charm rather than trying to catch something overlooked.
The film's original 2.35:1 aspect ratio is intact with 16:9 enhancement. The colors are bright and there's no oversaturation. Fleshtones appear natural throughout. Contrast is fine, with deep blacks and greys.
While BVHE claims the film is presented with a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, it's actually a 2.0 mix. While the dialogue-driven film doesn't require an extremely active mix, there are some well conceived directional effects, although limited to the front soundstage. The dialogue is well focused and always free from distortion.
