One of the best films of the ‘60s, “THE SWIMMER,”
has been released on dvd by COLUMBIA TRISTAR. Burt Lancaster stars as Ned
Merrill, a man whom, as the film opens, looks as if he’s got the world on a
string. He’s in great shape, envied by most men, lusted after by most women
and enjoying the world her lives in. And, why shouldn’t he? He can
casually jump into a neighbor’s pool and a martini already awaits him upon his
exit. This carefree lifestyle is made more apparent as the festive
poolside inhabitants line up to visit another neighbor’s new pool. Soon
enough, Ned lets the audience and guests know his intent to “swim” home.
While Ned goes from one pool to the next, edging closer to his home, more and
more is revealed about his real life, as well as about those people we’re
introduced to, all leading up to a powerful, disturbing, and unforgettable
conclusion. “THE SWIMMER” is a great film!
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has preserved the film’s 1.85:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9
enhancement. The colors are solid, and it’s a wonderful image.
There is great detail in every instance, and colors are often rich, without ever
succumbing to oversaturation. Contrast is excellent, offering great depth
in darker scenes. Fleshtones appear natural.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has preserved the film’s monaural mix remarkably well. It
offers fine fidelity, complimenting Marvin Hamlish’s first film score.
Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
Several trailers are included.
