BUENA Vista has released an offbeat comedy titled "Sweet Revenge."
Sam Neill and Helena Bonham Carter star as two strangers thrown together by
fate, after they save each other from their individual plans of suicide by
jumping from London's Tower Bridge. It's reminiscent of the angel and
Jimmy Stewart's rescue scene from "It's a Wonderful Life."
The scene is well executed and raises one's expectations for the rest of the
film. As the plot advances, Carter decides to seek revenge on those responsible
for causing them both to want to end their lives. This idea offers some
great scenes as
she develops ways to get back at the man who has taken Neill's job and the woman
who caused her affair to come to a sudden end. Director/writer Malcolm
Mowbray moves the film along at a steady pace, but his script becomes too
predictable at times, saved only by the wonderful performances.
While some will find the film a little to dry, most should find it
entertaining, and at least the first 2/3rds of the film is extremely fresh
and entertaining.
BUENA VISTA has provided a wonderful transfer for the dvd. The original
1.85:1 aspect ratio is intact with 16:9 enhancement. Color values are
solid. There is great resolution in almost every scene. Although
there is some grain, it doesn't detract from the overall quality. Contrast
is fine, with deep blacks and grays. Fleshtones appear natural throughout.
The Surround sound is restrained. While there are a few directional
effects, the film is dialogue driven, and the front soundstage is where all
separation is focused. The dialogue is always intelligible and free of
distortion. There are no supplements.
