PARAMOUNT

Summer Rental-
Fans of John Candy will appreciate PARAMOUNT'S new release of "SUMMER RENTAL."  While it's not extremely witty, it does offer the kind of slapstick, light-hearted humor Candy is so well known for.  Candy plays Jack Chester, an air traffic controller who's in desperate need of a vacation.
This is made apparent in one of the earliest scenes.  He causes a near panic when misidentifying a fly on his screen for a plane!  Deciding to go with the family on a trip, they head off to Florida to enjoy the beach and stay at a summer rental home. Of course, one mistake after another happens, and Candy manages to upset pretty much everyone he runs into.  The worst run-in occurs when Candy runs his boat into "Captain Al" the person in charge of his rental!  When he's about to be kicked out, he decides to take the Captain on in a regatta.  If he wins the race, he can stay on in the house for an extended vacation, free! However, if he loses, the family's out and loses their rent. This sets up the rest of the film for some genuine laughs and the chance for Candy to become a modest hero to his family.  While except for an "implant" joke, this is a family oriented film, it doesn't offer much for "adults" in terms of sophisticated laughs.  While younger viewers will probably enjoy the film on repeat viewings, there's little reason for adults to view it more than once.

PARAMOUNT has preserved the film's original 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement.  The color values are extremely sharp, offering a pleasing image   Unfortunately, there is excessive grain, and it's noticeable throughout the film.  Still, the overall picture quality is good, and even with the grain, it's pleasing.

The sound mix is a flat dolby Mono 1.0 mix.  While it's intelligible
throughout, it's limited in fidelity.  The original theatrical trailer is
included.
