STUART SAVES THE FAMILY-
As is a sickening standard with Lorne Michaels, any bit on "SATURDAY NIGHT
LIVE" that appears to have a following, gets to be extended into a feature
film! Al Franken stars as Stuart Smalley, the "self-help" guru
with his own cable show. After it's been moved to early, early morning
air-time, Stuart begins a sudden tail-spin into advanced depression, but he's
unable to wallow in his own pity for long, as his family has more than its share
of problems, and Stuart must focus on helping them. Luckilly, he has some
very
good friends he can count on for support. He needs it! His father's
a
jerk, his sister suffers from obesity, and his brother's a burn-out!
Writer/star Al Franken is extremely witty and there are some great scenes in the
film. Unfortunately, it's just too hard to stretch out funny
"segments" into a feature-length film, without boring the viewer!
Even under Harold Ramis' capable direction, there are far too many sluggish
spots!
PARAMOUNT has preserved the film's original 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16:9
enhancement. The color values are solid, with deep hues and no
over-saturation. The contrast is fine with deep blacks and grays.
Fleshtones appear natural.
The soundmix is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. While there are some
directional effects in the front soundstage, the only surround moments come when
the wonderful score engulfs the listener. Dialogue is intelligible and
free from distortion. The original theatrical trailer is included.
