While PARAMOUNT has
previously released “STAR TREK: NEXT GENERATION”, and other spinoffs from the
original series, now “STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES” is being released as it
should be, in entire seasons! The entire first season of “STAR TREK: THE
ORIGINAL SERIES.” Sure, special effects have advanced by light years, but
there’s still a thrill to be had when hearing the opening words of the credit
sequence, ”THESE ARE THE VOYAGES”… and then seeing the model “ENTERPRISE” flash
by. One of the best episodes from this season, is undoubtedly the two-parter,
“THE MENAGERIE”. The Romulans are introduced to viewers in the classic episode,
“BALANCE OF TERROR”, mar king one of the best-written dramas from the series.
There are a few mediocre
episodes, but most are terrific and fun for repeated viewing. The special
effects may appear cheesy, but the show’s so well done, that it matters not!
Sure, the sets look fake, but they’re impressive all the same!
PARAMOUNT has packaged
this entry in a different manner than all of the other “STAR TREK” releases.
“STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES-THE COMPLETE SEASON 1” is presented over 8
discs, with all 29 episodes. Packaged in a case resembling a tricorder, it
needs to be opened before revealing a cd case holding the discs inside.
While it’s an interesting
presentation, it’s not user-friendly, and with the future seasons appearing to
be packaged in the same manner, it will probably mean storage of these releases
has to be separate from all other better conforming dvds.
PARAMOUNT has presented
the episodes in their original 1.33:1 aspect ratios. The image is sharp. While
there is some grain in spots, colors are solid and often vibrant. Fleshtones
appear natural(when intended).
PARAMOUNT has provided
two soundmixes. An option for either 2.0 or Dolby Digital 5.1 is offered, but
there’s little competition. While the 2.0 suffers from a dull atmosphere, the
5.1 mix is terrific! Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion,
and there are numerous, creative surround effects.
PARAMOUNT has included
numerous extras! There are several text commentaries. These take the form of
bubbles appearing on screen and are positioned so as to not interfere with the
on-going action. There is a preview before each episode.
The last disc offers the
majority of extras. Featurettes revolving around the show’s creation, include
interviews with Roddenberry, Shatner and others.
Casual and new viewers
to this series will become hooked after watching the presentation here. Trekkies
will be extremely satisfied!
