Director Billy Wilder has long been considered one of the greatest comedy directors. While some of his latter films were disappointing, one of his best, "SOME LIKE IT HOT," stands the test of time. For those who've never seen this masterpiece, "SOME LIKE IT HOT" is now available on blu-ray from MGM/FOX.  After witnessing the St. Valentine's Day Massacre,  two struggling musicians, Joe and Jerry, in order to avoid being killed, disguise themselves as women, Josephine and Daphne, in order to hide out as part of an all girl's jazz band.  Surrounded by beautiful women creates plenty of comedic situations, and even more-so when they both meet and fall for "Sugar," (Marilyn Monroe)the band's singer.  Monroe is terrific here, but so is everyone. Tony Curtis has never been better and his teaming with Jack Lemmon makes for one of the best comedy pairings in film history, really! They are that great together.

The script is often brilliant, and the comedy doesn't shy away from making subtle statements regarding sexuality and role reversal, however, it handles these themes in a delicate, classy kind of way, without ever succumbing to the low-brow humor of modern day tv and films and far superior to even decent efforts, eg. "BOSOM BUDDIES," "TOOTSIE."

While Monroe has always been sexy in her films, even with the breezy persona of "Sugar," a captivating sense of depth is offered, and making one really notice how fine an actress she really was.

"SOME LIKE IT HOT" is one of those rare films of yesteryear, that is just as entertaining today as when it was originally released 52 years ago! It's also the kind of classic that can be watched with the entire family, young and old.

MGM/FOX has provided the correct 1.66:1 aspect ratio for this AVC MPEG-4 1080p encoded blu-ray.  While imperfect, due to some occasional dirt and flickering, the image is a major improvement over the previously available dvd from the collector's edition. Detail is stunning, and blacks are deep enough to really impress viewers with the high quality potential of a black&white film presented well. Minor grain, preserving the "film" look, is present but never intrusive.

MGM/FOX has provided a 5.1 lossy remix. While it's sad no original mono mix is provided, the enhanced mix is really good. Most of the mix is focused towards the front center channel, but when side or surround speakers kick in to enhance the wonderful score and songs, or occasional effects, everything feels natural. Music, dialogue  and the surround mix are perfectly balanced, and flawlessly presented.

MGM/FOX has provided extras carried over from the previously mentioned dvd collector's release.

An audio commentary with the son of one of the screenwriters as well as the more modern screenwriting duo of Lowell Ganz and Baballoo Mandel(SPLASH, PARENTHOOD,Etc.) It's a must-listen to, for any aspiring screenwriter.

Other documentaries and featurettes are offered, all in standard resolution. The theatrical trailer is offered in 1080p.
