"SOLO" received a decent laserdisc transfer several years ago. Now, Columbia TriStar has released it on dvd and improved upon it greatly. The excellent transfer however, can't make a "fair" movie "great". Mario Van Peebles stars as a military android, a "Universal Soldier" if you will!!! When his combat unit kills innocent civilians, "Solo" decides to do the right thing and fight injustice. The film borrows a little from almost every other action film, including "Terminator" and "Universal Soldier", but even what it borrows is just a poor imitation, due to the more modest budget on display here. There's some decent location photography, and the strong contrast and color values really brings out the detail in virtually every scene without grain or artifacts. The Dolby digital 5.1 sound is extremely active with virtually non-stop directional effects. A featurette is included with behind the scenes footage.
