SOAPDISH
Far superior than the overrated “TOOTSIE”, “SOAPDISH” now has the chance to win a larger audience than it received during its short theatrical release now that PARAMOUNT has given its dvd debut a stellar presentation.
This satirical look at television soap operas stars Sally Field and Kevin Kline. Field is perfect in the role of Celeste Talbert, a bitchy Joan Collins-ish soap actress star on “The Sun Also Sets”. No one that works with Celeste likes her, and the show’s producer, Robert Downey Jr, is desperately trying to seduce another actress, Cathy Moriarty. Moriarty is competing for more screen time from Celeste, so she and Downey try to get her fired. When this attempt fails, they try more desperate measures. They have found and brought back Kevin Kline, Field’s former off-screen and on-screen lover. When this duo’s relationship finally ended badly, Kline was fired. Moriarty and Downey believe that bringing him back will lead to Field’s eventual departure from the show. The plot becomes much more complex but brilliantly thought out as secrets from the past and twists and turns come about every few minutes. The supporting cast is terrific, and Teri Hatcher has never looked better than she does here.
PARAMOUNT has given the film a sensational transfer here. The film’s original 1.85:1 aspect ratio has been retained with 16:9 enhancement. The colors are solid and vibrant. Fleshtones appear natural throughout. There is great detail in every scene, and the contrast is flawless, allowing for deep, deep blacks and greys in virtually every scene.
PARAMOUNT has provided a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix for this release. While most of the film is monaural, there are a few directional effect moments, although confined to the front soundstage. Surrounds come into play by enhancing the film’s score but in little else, save a few atmospheric moments. A 2.0 mix is also included, and while it offers more thorough surround elements, the 5.1 mix is generally better produced.
