SONY has released one of the best films of 2009, "A SINGLE MAN" on blu-ray. Colin Firth stars as George, a well regarded English Professor, no longer able to live with the loss of his gay lover, Jim, taken away from him in a car accident, 8 months earlier. In a matter-of-fact manner, George lets the audience know that he's determined to finally end the pain and his life. The degree of his loss is revealed in stunningly poignant flashback sequences. His attempts to find comfort with his former girlfriend(Julianne Moore)from a time before he accepted his sexuality, can't fill the void, and while we see the inevitable conclusion coming, we, almost like George, are powerless to stop the it.
What could've easily become a monotonous, self-indulgent offering, instead, has great depth, due to co-writer and director, Tom Ford. While apparently known in the fashion circles, Ford, solidly proves he's a fine director. Not only is "A SINGLE MAN" visually stunning, it's also powerful and unforgettable in almost every way conceivable. The pacing is just right, and while the imagery is mesmerizing, it never feels over-the-top. "A SINGLE MAN" deals with a man filled with a sense of grace, in a graceful way. There's not enough praise that can be given to it. SEE THIS!!!
SONY has provided the correct 2.40:1 aspect ratio for this AVC MPEG-4 1080p blu-ray. Colors are vivid and the black&white scenes are just as impressive due to the inky blacks consistent in this transfer. Grain is present but it only adds to the film quality of the transfer, making it an asset rather than a distraction.
SONY has provided a DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix The mix is decidedly front center channel focused. While ambient effects are effective when utilized, surrounds are rarely utilized. However, the music is wonderfully complimented through all speakers with great fidelity.
A featurette, built around clips and interviews, is worthwhile. A running commentary with Ford, is highly educational in terms of themes and filmmaking in general, without ever becoming dry.
