Tanya Roberts, of "Charlie's Angels" fame stars as "Sheena" in "Sheena:Queen
of the Jungle" just released on dvd from COLUMBIA TRISTAR.
The story is basically "Tarzan" in reverse, with a young girl being raised
in the jungle, mastering control of the wildlife and great strength. Ted
Wass plays a reporter, out for a big story, as well as Sheena's heart.
There are plenty of bad guys, corny dialogue, scanty clothing, and impressive
landscapes to make this actually fun for the whole family. Young girls
especially seem to love the film, and it's a throwback to the bad "b" movies
grandpa is sure to remember, just a little more risque'. Director John
Guillerman is gifted in making mediocre tales entertaining. Just look at what he
did with "Conan:The Destroyer". His talent is apparent throughout this
film as well. While the story is devoid of any over or under "tones", the film
moves at a steady pace.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has provided the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio with 16:9
enhancement here. Unfortunately, there's a lot of grain throughout and it can be
distracting. Colors are generally solid, without oversaturation.
Fleshtones appear natural and contrast is generally fine.
The Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack is limited in fidelity. While there
are some separational effects, they're rare. Dialogue is focused towards
the center channel and free of distortion. The rear speaker effects are
minimal.
