Burt Reynolds actually used to make some decent films.
"SHAMUS", just released from COLUMBIA TRISTAR, in a
bare-bones transfer, was one of them.
Reynolds plays "Shamus" McCoy, a private-eye caught up in
an investigation involving ruthless diamond thieves, arms-dealing,
and Dyanne Cannon as the sister to one of the bad guys.
It's not long after Reynolds meets Cannon, that he's in bed with her,
and in spite of a transfer that often appears muted, Ms. Cannon looks
as beautiful as ever.
There's plenty of action here, as Reynolds punches, runs, and takes
on about everyone, including some flame-thrower killer.
The dialogue is often corny, but entertaining, and Reynolds' lines
towards the women that are supposed to be turned on to him are
unintentionally hilarious.
Falling into a plot outline more typical of the '60s, Shamus is given
a sidekick, a funny, but doomed partner from the beginning.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has chosen to release this as a pan&scan only dvd
release! The framing doesn't look right at all, and colors are
subdued throughout. Fleshtones appear natural and the transfer is
better than VHS, but it's a shame this didn't get the aspect ratio
and 16:9 enhancement.
The Monaural sound is fine. Dialogue is always intelligible and free
from distortion.
A few trailers are included.
