The 500 minute epic mini-series, "SHAKA ZULU" has been released in a boxed set from A&E Home Video.
The historical elements of this drama dealing with the British and African natives, probably leaves a lot of room for criticism. While there is some historical accuracy to what the British did at certain timelines within this fictional story, there are more inaccuracies than truths. Still, "SHAKA ZULU" is clearly meant to entertain more than educate, and it does this quite well! The show also has a fair amount of violence, but it's still tame by today's standards. The imagery and exotic locations are often staggering to see, and the series does the utmost to blow us away with it.
A&E has presented this transfer with the correct Full Screen aspect ratio. While there's a lot of grain, colors are, for the most part, impressive. Unfortunately, they're not as rich as the exotic locations deserve. Still, in spite of a less than lavish color scheme, the image offers generally fine detail.
The 2.0 stereo mix is somewhat dated, revealing background hiss. There's surprisingly limited fidelity as well. Dialogue is intelligible but there is also some distortion and muffling in certain scenes.
A brief interview with director William C. Fuare and cast is offered. There are also some pictures of pre-production art.
"SHAKA ZULU" is an entertaining mini-series that deserves a better transfer.
