Melanie Griffith and Tom Berenger star in the "straight-to-dvd"
release,
"SHADOW OF DOUBT." The premise to this thriller is similar to
the numerous made for "Showtime" erotic thrillers. Throw together a
crack-shot district attorney, a pretty defense attorney and a seemingly innocent
defendant accused of a violent murder, and you have the blueprint for any number
of late-night "Basic Instinct"-like low budget films. The producers
apparently thought that Tom Berenger and Melanie Griffith could help raise the
film above a "cable-made" appearance. Both of them are decent,
but it's rocker
Huey Lewis that gives the best performance here as the investigator helping out
Griffith on her case. There are a few surprises, but ultimately, the
film's conclusion is predictable and anti-climatic. Director Randal
Kleiser, once a "big" name for his huge hits such as
"Grease" and "Blue Lagoon" is at the helm here. He's
actually developed a real talent over the years.(Just see his unforgettable
"It's My Party" for proof!) and there are some genuinely creative
moments achieved in "Shadow of Doubt", his first venture into the
"suspense" genre. His sense of pacing and innovativeness
is on display throughout the film, and we only hope he gets the chance to direct
"bigger" thrillers down the road.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has provided a sharp looking transfer. The film's
original 1.85:1 aspect ratio is intact with 16:9 enhancement. Virtually
every scene has a polished look to it! The resolution is flawless!
The color values are solid and while they're sharp, they're never oversaturated.
Kleiser creates some dark compositions for the "thriller" aspect of
the film, and all of them benefit from the flawless contrast! The blacks
and grays are deep and always defined.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix offers a variety of directional effects,
frequently utilizing the surrounds for effects that appear manufactured, but
effective. The .1LFE tracks are generally restrained, but even this comes
to life in a few pivotal moments. The theatrical trailer is included.
