SELENA

The tragedy that befell the young singer Selena, could have been perfect material for countless bad t.v. movies. It's a positive sign that Director Gregory Nava actually told her story with the dramatic flair, technique, and sensitivity that's been achieved here. Jennifer Lopez is quite good in her role, but the supporting case, including Edward James Olmos, is outstanding. The picture is brighter than the laserdisc version, and many of the darker concert scenes clearly benefit from the DVD process. Still, the Dolby Digital(5.1) sound is brighter and more active in the laserdisc format.
