"SANCTUARY: THE COMPLETE 2ND SEASON" is being released simultaneously on blu-ray alongside "SEASON ONE." Comprised of 13 episodes, the 2nd season offers more consistently enthralling storylines than offered in the original season. Picking up where the 1st season's cliff-hanger left off, the threat to "The Sanctuary," its inhabitants and humanity, is focused upon with Dr. Magnus's daughter, Ashley, now working for the "Cabal," and using her unique knowledge surrounding the "Sanctuary" and its safety-measures, to benefit the soldiers she leads bent on unleashing the "abnormals" onto society. The drastic upheaval brought upon the sanctuary, by someone who was once "one of their own" leaves a powerful impact on those working for the altruistic purpose of the Sanctuary, but also for the viewer as well. The 1st season had its share of flaws, mostly while the series tried to find its own heartbeat and sense of depth. "SANCTUARY: THE COMPLETE 2ND SEASON" has found its footing and there's a real poignancy and sense of urgency to the sanctuary's mission, within the majority of episodes. This season is also enhanced as the series opens up in many ways. The Sanctuary is not only threatened by external forces, such as the Cabal, but also from within, as various Sanctuary leaders and Magnus battle over the direction and purpose they require.
E1 ENTERTAINMENT has provided the correct 1.78:1 aspect ratio for this AVC MPEG-4 1080p blu-ray. As both seasons are being released alongside one another, the significant improvement in image quality demonstrated in "SEASON 2" is even more notable. While the improved budget obviously makes for better special effects, the digital backgrounds are also greatly improved upon here, as well. Colors are richer and contrast is greatly improved, without the frequency of artifacts plaguing the previous season. Sure, some ghosting occurs, and blacks aren't inky, but the overall image quality is quite good, and a major improvement.
E1 ENTERTAINMENT has provided another DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix. This lossy mix is on par with the aggressive, creative mix of the first season. In addition to a plethora of discrete effects, deep bass, music, and dialogue blend together with perfect balance. Fidelity is top-notch, and even though it may lack the clarity of subtle effect clarity, "SANCTUARY: COMPLETE 2ND SEASON" is one of the better tv series soundmixes of 2010.
A variety of extras is offered, including a brief discussion with Tapping, Martin Wood and the series creator, as they discuss the broader scope of the series within the 2nd season(1080p).
Bloopers and outtakes are also offered in 1080p, but the rest of the extras are only offered in 720p. These other extras include a brief look at Tapping with behind-the-scenes footage as she directs the episode, "VERITAS." An interesting look at "NEXT TUESDAY," an episode completely within a single location, makes for compelling viewing.
The rest of the extras are for die-hard fans, only.
