SABRINA-
PARAMOUNT has released one of Audrey Hepburn's and Billy Wilder's best films,
"SABRINA" on dvd. While the recent PARAMOUNT remake wasn't
nearly as bad as critics described, the original is a classic, and the high
quality dvd presentation should win it many new fans.
Hepburn plays the daughter of a chauffeur to the Larrabees, a wealthy family
whose two sons, William Holden and Humphrey Bogart, both become attracted to as
she matures. Holden and Bogart are extremely different from one another.
Holden's character is a care-free, lazy type. Bogart is extremely
business-like and cold. Hepburn's father had sent her off to Paris for
school and to avoid any problems caused by the brothers possibly vying for her
attention and "class-mixing." When she returns to America,
Holden is set to marry in a business-like arrangement his brother has concocted.
Bogart, wanting to ensure this merger, decides to date Heburn himself, and
inevitably falls for her. The film's script offers great romance and
comedy, and Wilder is, as always, wonderful in his storytelling here!
PARAMOUNT HOME ENTERTAINMENT has presented this release in its correct 1.33:1
aspect ratio. The black&white cinematography is excellent and the
transfer allows for the image to remain crisp throughout. The contrast is
wonderful, with deep blacks and grays. While there is some grain, it's
minimal.
The Dolby Digital monaural sound reveals some of its limitations in
frequency range. Although the dialogue is intelligible, it lacks the
sharpness of many other PARAMOUNT monaural dvd releases.
PARAMOUNT has included a short documentary about the film's production as a
supplement.
