Writer Scott Rosenberg isn't as original here as he was in his previous efforts, "Things to Do in Denver While You're Dead", "Beautiful Girls", but there's some interesting interplay between the main villians. Nicolas Cage stars as an army ranger doing time for the self-defense killing of a thug attacking him and his pregnant wife. About to be released, things go awry when cons aboard his plane break free, hence the title, "Con Air." Music Video Director Simon West makes his theatrical debut here, and it's impressive. Certainly, any Jerry Bruckheimer film has to have explosions, but West adds some visual dynamics to some tired effects.
The THX transfer from TOUCHSTONE IMAGE is quite stunning. The colors are perfect and the picture is slick-looking throughout the film. The letterboxed 2.35:1 image is crucial in preserving the various stunt/explosion sequences. The standard dolby surround sound is dynamic, presenting numerous effects in all directions, but the Dolby Digital track is far superior with more depth to every sound.

There are enough laughs in "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion" to recommend it, but it's a shame that it's often too broad in scope for its own good. One scene in particular, chapter 4, in which one of the girls is shown working at a Jaguar dealership, is excruciatingly difficult to watch. However, the film is typically well-written and there's creative direction, often utilizing flashbacks, camera techniques and other devices to tell the story in an engaging manner. Lisa Kudrow appears to be duplicating her t.v. persona for the big screen and Mira Sorvino portrays a similar character. The images look wonderful with outstanding fleshtones and a slick overall atmosphere. The Dolby Digital soundtrack features a calvacade of popular modern rock/pop songs and creative directional effects.
