Rob Roy has been available on both DVD and laserdisc with Dolby Digital encoding, demonstrates how a well produced DTS disc can exceed Dolby Digital.  We had thought that the film's first scene in which we meet Rob Roy within a soundmix involving percussion instruments rotating from left to right speakers, would be a fine example.   But, the Dolby Digital 5.1 laserdisc seemed to have slightly more separation.   This was the same circumstance for the rest of the music soundtrack that followed.   But, there was a major difference and improvement in separation obvious in almost every sound effect sequence.  When Jessica Lange first sees Tim Roth's troops slowly appearing from the midst on side 1, there's a superior sense of atmoshpere achieved in comparison to the other versions.  Bullets fly by with much more distinction as well.   The picture quality is of the same high standards set forth on the previous laser, but there's a slight edge given to the DVD in terms of  depth.  Overall, the sound quality and its benefits make for the best version so far to be the DTS laserdisc.
