COLUMBIA TRISTAR has released a full frame version of "RETURN TO BLUE LAGOON."  While this reviewer loathed the original "BLUE LAGOON", due to its horrendous script and direction, "RETURN TO BLUE LAGOON", at least has better actors and direction.  The plot, however, is basically a retread of the original and "not" a sequel, in spite of the misleading title. 

A young boy, recently orphaned, is raised by a nice widow, along with her own daughter.  While traveling across the ocean, they become shipwrecked, and the woman must struggle not only to teach them how to survive, but to instill values upon them as well.  When she dies, the two children, now post-puberty years, are now more free to express their affection towards one another, and actually "marry" to allow their sexual experience to have moral justification.  They have their own paradise in many respects, but this is put in danger when a ship finally arrives, throwing all of their instincts and emotions into conflict. 

While Ms. Jovovich is actually quite pleasant to look at, and is frequently near-naked, her looks alone, can't save the film.  Every scene is predictable, and while it's better than "BLUE LAGOON", it's not that much better!  We prefer the even more blatant, campier rip-off, "PARADISE".  At least that one has Phoebe Cates in the raw, and it was funny!

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has released this in full-frame only, and it appears that the framing has suffered in many scenes due to cropping.  Otherwise, the image is impressive!  Colors are strong and the exotic locations are complimented with rich colors and no oversaturation.  Contrast is decent, although some darker scenes lack detail. Fleshtones appear natural throughout. There is some infrequent grain, presumably due to the "blow-up" of images.

The Dolby 2.0 soundmix offers some ambient effects, but it deserves to be more aggressive.  There is minimal surround use.  Dialogue is intelligible and free from distortion.
