"REMEMBER THE TITANS" is "serious" fare from Producer
Jerry Bruckheimer. "Serious" by Bruckheimer
"standards" calls for at least one sequence wherein the more likeable
characters join in a dance to a popular song medley! Based on a true
story, Denzel Washington gives another great performance as Herman Boone, a
coach brought into a recently desegregated school to help unite the school's
football team's new and original players unite for a winning season! He's
actually pushing the original coach into an assistant position, and that coach,
played convincingly by Will Patton, has a big following with his players and
their families. While the film's transitions between drama and comedy tend to
undermine its overall impact and statement on racial equality, it add least
deserves credit for being entertaining without entirely sacrificing a message.
BUENA VISTA has preserved the film's original 2.35:1 aspect ratio with 16:9
enhancement. The image is filled with great detail in every scene!
This is a slick, well-polished image and BUENA VISTA has gone so far as to have
it "THX" approved! The color values are extremely solid, always
vibrant, without any oversaturation! Fleshtones appear natural throughout
the film.
One of the things we most look forward to with BUENA VISTA releases, is their
offering of both Dolby Digital "And" DTS 5.1 soundmixes! While
both mixes offer their share of surround and directional effects, most of the
separation is reserved for the musical score, which though effective, is far too
melodramatic for the film's own good. The separation does manage to help
render the numerous classic songs featured throughout the film in their best
possible form. The Dolby Digital and DTS mixes offer virtually the same
sound design, although the DTS mix has better bass control and offers sharper
definition to the more subtle effects.
Director Boaz Yakin, writer Gregory Allen Howard and producer Jerry
Bruckheimer join together for the audio commentary track. Allen offers
the most reason to listen to the commentary. He obviously did extensive
research for the film's script and he's able to put a great deal of the
story's themes and relevant history into perspective. Bruckheimer is
more candid here than he is typically on his previous commentaries,
perhaps due to the more serious nature of the film. Yakin is the
weakest element of the commentary, offering only general insight into
the filmmaking process.
The 2nd Commentary offers the perspectives of the "actual" coaches
depicted in the film. The real-life Herman Boone and Bill Yoast. This
is a great commentary! Often funny, and certainly moving, these two
demonstrate a great chemistry together and help in adding the historical
dimension to the film's background in "Daily" comprehensible terms,
but
with a folksy-down to earth manner.
"DENZEL BECOMES BOONE" is a short segment focusing on Denzel's
interpretation and pre-work in taking on this role.
"A JOURNEY BEHIND THE SCENES" is a fluff-piece promotional featurette,
longer than most, at 20 minutes, it offers fans of the film a chance to see more
clips, and media "celebrating" the movie.
"BEATING THE ODDS" is another featurette outlining the challengers of
making the film. We learn that studios weren't interested in it at all,
until Bruckheimer championed it to Disney.
"DELETED SCENES" -This segment offers 6 separate scenes, in dolby
digital 5.1! A few of them are actually quite good, but the film
already begins to drag in spots, and their addition would surely have
slowed the film even more.
The film's original theatrical trailer is also included in Dolby
Digital 5.1
