We're extremely pleased that Albert Brooks' ingenious "mockumentary"
"REAL LIFE" has been released on dvd by PARAMOUNT. Inspired, it
seems, by the innovative(even by today's standards) "reality-based"
documentary about the Louder Family, "REAL LIFE" follows
in "Spinal Tap"-like fashion, the destruction of an American family.
Documentary filmmaker, Albert Brooks has chosen to study the Yeager family for
an entire year as part of an experiment on Human Behavior. While it's
hysterically funny, there's also an important commentary about the whole concept
of "documentary" filmmaking. Brooks cleverly manages to show that the
line between how people behave and "act" is blurred just by the mere
knowledge of a camera present. Does anyone believe the police in
"COPS" behave with the same grace and candor as they arrest criminal
suspects as they would if there not been a camera there? While the
film does become sluggish in spots, its originality and "inspired"
moments make the film worth seeing.
PARAMOUNT has presented the film with its proper 1.85:1 aspect ratio and 16:9
enhancement. The film is 21 years old, so it suffers in spots from age.
Color values are generally fine, but they're not nearly as vibrant as we wish
they'd been. The contrast is adequate, but there's not the great clarity
in the film's darkest scenes, to which we've been accustomed to with most
Paramount releases.
The original monaural soundtrack is featured. While the dialogue is always
intelligible, there is some infrequent background noise.
PARAMOUNT has included an interview with Brooks, that's both entertaining and
insightful. The theatrical trailer is also included with 16:9
enhancement and monaural sound.
