Robert Altman's look at the fashion industry "Pret-A-Porter" or "Ready to Wear" isn't as biting as his earlier works like "Nashville", but it's entertaining and offers some fine moments with Sophia Loren and other "stars", making it worthwhile, albeit light fare.  The dvd transfer is much sharper than the previously available laserdisc with sharper detail in almost every scene.  The textures of the various clothing designs are almost 3 dimensional in their clarity.   The dolby digital 5.1 sound is just as lively as the laserdisc counterpart, used mostly to boost the wonderful soundtrack, but little else in the way of directional effects.

One of the most overlooked independent films of the 90s, "Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead" has arrived on dvd with a spectacular transfer.  In an era of non-stop Tarantino-esque rip-offs, this one offers a rare but welcome original "feel" to it.  Andy Garcia is terrific, but Treat Williams all but steals the film with his over-the-top scary/hilarious performance as a criminal with homicidal tendencies.  The image looks wonderful with outstanding contrast in even the darkest scenes.  The dolby digital 5.1 sound is extremely active offering a multitude of sensational effects at key moments throughout the film.   A GREAT DVD!!!!

While Sharon Stone was given a lot of compliments for her work here, we were more impressed with Gillian Anderson.  A film dealing with young outcasts as well as adults whom have lost their innocence, "The Mighty" is a small, but involving film that's worth seeing, but we recommend viewing it first before deciding whether or not to add it to your collection.  If you're a fan of the film already, fear not!!!   The transfer is fine, although we feel the contrast could've been sharper.   The dolby digital 5.1 sound offers minimal directional effects, but this isn't a film that cries out for an active sound mix either.

We were truly disappointed that for some unknown reason Buena Vista elected not to include the same dolby digital 5.1 encoding found on the laserdisc.  The laserdisc offered some brief but effective directional effects.  While the dvd's surround sound has obvious directional effects, they're not as defined as the laserdisc, and there's no reason for this difference!!!  The picture, however, is sharper with more consistent fleshtones.   Ben Stiller stars in this hilarious character ensemble which never lets up!!!!

Ridley Scott's uneven "White Squall" offers an undeniably exciting shipwreck, and that's the best part of the film.  While there's a great deal of time spent building the various characters, we felt it dragged a bit, but even in these earlier scenes, the great contrast and fleshtones, as well as atmospheric sound effects, come to life with bravado.  The dvd transfer is exceptional, adding even greater sharpness and clarity than the laserdisc version.  The dolby digital 5.1 sound mix is filled with directional effects from start-to-finish.  Another advantage over the laserdisc, it's all on one side!!!!

While this reviewer found "Spy Hard" to be real boring, there's undoubtedly many fans.  They will be extremely satisfied with the transfer offered here.   The fleshtones are perfect and the clarity of every image is nearly flawless, and without any artifacts.  The dolby  digital 5.1 sound is extremely active adding greatly to the film's atmosphere.  (Note: Nicollette Sheridan has never looked better!)
