While Jackie Chan's name is prominently displayed above the title for the dvd
release of "THE PRISONER," he's but one of "many" actors in
the film. In fact, several actors get more screen time than he does!
"THE PRISONER" is in no way similar to the typical "Jackie
Chan" film! The story doesn't move along in the comic-book like style
as most his films do. Also, the plot here is extremely convoluted!
In fact, too convoluted to try explaining here! Basically, the film
concerns three different "prisoners" as we see not only what brought
them to a notoriously corrupt prison, but, what happens during and following a
daring escape! While there's some entertaining action sequences, but none
of them are original! The film's direction isn't that great either, with
long lulls in between action sequences, and a confusing style that never
convincingly portrays events in an accessible, chronological manner.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has presented the film with the proper 1.85:1 aspect ratio, but
"without" 16:9 enhancement! This is not one of the studio's
finer releases! The color values are drab! The design of the film
appears dull, and the contrast is only of average quality!
The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mix is surprisingly restrained! There are few
surround effects found here! The frequency range is also somewhat
confined!
Except for a few moments wherein the bass really kicks in, there's not much
interesting about this mix at all!
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has decided to provide some supplements on this release.
Martial arts star, Phillip Rhee provides an audio commentary on an optional
track. He knows the various actors involved with this production well, and
offers some entertaining stories concerning their work here. It's a
generally entertaining commentary, but not overly informational. There is
also a theatrical trailer for the film, in full-screen.
