FOX has released a remastered blu-ray of "PREDATOR," coinciding with the upcoming theatrical release of a sort of sequel to it. Pretty much an action film, tinged with some crafty sci-fi elements, "PREDATOR" stars Schwarzenegger as Major Shaeffer, whom with his friend, George Dillon, of the CIA, lead a quest into the jungles of Guatemala, trying to rescue a government official that has been kidnapped. Soon enough, their mission becomes more challenging, upon the discovery of bodies hanging from trees, after having been skinned. An Alien (Predator) is methodically using its skills to eliminate the commandos, one at a time. While there are a fair amount of scenes that are over-the-top, both in writing and imagery, it doesn't stop "PREDATOR" from remaining one of the best action films of the '80s.  The special effects, stunts and pacing make for non-stop entertainment, and younger, more discerning viewers will still enjoy it, even without it using the advanced CGI capabilities so prominent today.

While previously available on blu-ray, the older version suffered from artifacts. FOX has remastered "PREDATOR" for this release, even upping it to a 50GB dual-layer disc. Unfortunately, while the new remaster doesn't have the noise of the earlier version, it's only due to controversial digital noise reduction.  Grain, in and of itself isn't bad and even helps provide the "film" look desired on "film," even when transferred to dvd or blu-ray!  Detail has suffered greatly due to the DNR! While it's great to find the artifacts are gone, and contrast is good, it's a compromised victory.

FOX has carried over the same, terrific DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix of the earlier blu-ray and it's the best thing about the release. While the soundmix is limited by '80s design, when action occurs, LFE and discrete effects create a thoroughly immersive atmosphere. When action isn't occurring, most of the film is front channel focused, with some pleasing ambient effects coming in.

Most of the extras from earlier dvd release are carried over, and still only in SD! But, trailers, photo gallery and a sneak-peak are in full 1080p
