America Ferrera stars as Lucia, a young Mexican-American about to wed her boyfriend, Marcus, an African-American. As with so many cliche'-ridden romantic/comedies, neither family knows about the pending nuptials, and both have a lot of prejudicial beliefs about the other's culture. It also doesn't help much when Lucia's father, Miguel(Carlos Mencia) has just towed the car belonging to Marcus' father, Brad(a successful radio personality)played by Forest Whitaker. There are moments of actual tenderness peeping through the awkward stereotypes and predictable one-liners that make up most of the film. However, a lot of the intended humor is so primitive, it leaves the viewer feeling more uncomfortable than entertained.
The gags carrying sexual overtones, including a completely throw-away one with a goat, are in poor taste and simply not funny! It's a shame to find so much talent in a film that doesn't break down stereotypes but, rather, tries its hardest to live off of them for its entire duration. If everything begins with a script, why didn't anyone recognize how bad this one was?
FOX has provided the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio for this AVC MPEG-4 1080p blu-ray. Colors are vibrant and pushed to extremes, without reaching over-saturation. Details are impressive throughout, and notably so in comparison to dvd. Inky blacks retain the fine depth achieved, in even the darkest of scenes. A really good transfer, but just not reference quality.
FOX has provided a DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix. As with most romantic comedies, this one is front-focused. Surrounds are rarely utilized, save for musical interludes, wherein all speakers kick into high gear, and an immersive atmosphere is at hand. No distortion to be found and a generally pleasant, albeit, under-stated mix.
In addition to a gag reel and deleted scenes(all in 1080p), there is also an "alternate ending," featurette and trailer.
