Robin Williams has always been a terrific actor, and his most lauded performance in "GOOD WILL HUNTING" was just one of many other terrific ones.  Now, Williams can add his character of Sy to the list.  In "ONE HOUR PHOTO," Williams plays Sy, the local "one hour photo" guy, who seems like a nice enough guy. Unfortunately, Sy's got a lot of emotional problems!  What makes his performance, and the film, so great, is the fact that Williams never attempts to create the easy, cliche-filled characteristics of the typical psycho found in most films.  He truly has become this character, and it never, for even one instant, feels like he's "acting."  We thoroughly believe the character we're watching exists, making the film ever the more scarier.  Sy has no life, other than his job, and he's tried to create a fictitious one, duplicating photos of a family he longs to be a part of.  When events that transpire, show him this can't happen, he begins to act out on his emotions, with dire consequences for all involved.

Much of this film, while disturbing, feels fresh and original.  Alas, it's last half-hour becomes so troublesome that it comes close to alienating everyone.  It's slightly disappointing to find that a film so unpredictable, temporarily, gives in to commercial predictability near the finale.

FOX has provided the original 1.85:1 aspect ratio, with 16:9 enhancement. The colors are often very vibrant, but never oversaturated!  There is some grain, but it's never enough to be burdensome.  The contrast is flawless, offering extremely deep blacks and grays. The fleshtones are flawlessly presented.  This is a great transfer!

While there are many great dialogue-driven scenes, the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is also impressive.  Director Romanek uses the mix in extremely innovative ways.  Carefully blending scenes of dead silence with scenes of sudden eruption and dizzying effects, all completely discernible, combined with the film's eerie soundtrack, helps make this one of the better soundmixes we've heard in a long time!  Dialogue is always intelligible and free of distortion.

FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT has provided an audio commentary with Romanek and Williams.  It's a great commentary, and to Williams' credit, he's not fighting for laughs the entire time, instead opting for serious film-lover discussion.  This commentary offers the perfect blend of technical information as well as character and theme analysis, to make it helpful for aspiring filmmakers, as well as entertaining for fans.

A "Behind-the-scenes" featurette is included. But, it's brief and offers little worth mentioning.

A great Charlie Rose interview with Williams and Romanek is included.  Rose, as always, knows his subject matter, and it's a great interview.

A Sundance Channel "Anatomy of a Scene" feature is also offered.  It is focused upon the film's design, but also provides enough insight into other aspects of the film to make it entertaining for just about everyone.

The theatrical trailer is also included.
