"NECESSARY ROUGHNESS" has been released on dvd from PARAMOUNT.
The plot is far from original. A horrible school administrator sets out to
destroy the football team by putting together the "Necessary" elements
for a disaster! He hires a coach with a slumping record and provides an
even less inspiring team of players. Similar at times to
"WILDCATS", the film focuses on comedy, but has its share of dramatic
moments. While none of the film is truly inspired, there are a few
interesting dramatic moments. And, it's hard not to root for an underdog,
of which there are many here! Scott
Bakula is the over-the-hill college freshman with the chance to get his
degree "and" acclaim on the field. Larry Miller is well cast as
the College
Dean trying to thwart any chance of success that the league can muster.
Hector Elizondo provides his usual charismatic presence to the film as a
coach who really cares about his players. The marketing suggests Kathy
Ireland has a bigger part than she has. She is one of the best things the
film has going for it, convincingly warm-hearted and obviously attractive.
Her acting is far more convincing here than in anything else that she's
done.
PARAMOUNT has provided the transfer with the correct 1.85:1 anamorphic image.
The color values are solid and with great clarity. Contrast is generally
fine, although some of the darkest scenes lack the detail found in standard
PARAMOUNT dvd releases.
The soundtrack has been remastered for Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.
While it's not bad, there's really no discernible difference between it and the
original Dolby surround mix. The dialogue is free of distortion and there
are a few decent directional effects, but it's not nearly as aggressive in its
best scenes like "ANY GIVEN SUNDAY" is.
