"MYSTERIOUS ISLAND" has more than a fair share of Ray Harryhausen special effects, but unlike most of the "Harryhausen" films, the story to "MYSTERIOUS ISLAND" is so enthralling, that the special effects actually add to an already wonderful film. What has been typically the case, is that the special effects make up for a typically bad or only average film. It helps substantially that the story is adapted from Jule Verne's novel. A terrific opening sequence follows some Union Soldiers performing a daring escape from a Confederate prison, by seizing a balloon. Their action-packed escape is made even more thrilling, when having escaped the compound, a storm carries them off to sea, eventually leaving them stranded on an unknown island. Luckily, soon enough, they come upon two women whom have been shipwrecked, and they band together to survive. Harryhausen's effects come into play in several terrific scenes, but the one standing out the most involves one of the women and a romantic interest becoming caught in a giant bee's hive.
Add to this a surprise visit by the famous Captain Nemo with his famous ship "The Nautilus", and "MYSTERIOUS ISLAND" offers enough fun, excitement and special effects to entertain the entire family.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has presented this transfer with the original 1.85:1 aspect ratio and 16:9 enhancement. There is some excessive grain in a few sequences, however color values are generally solid. Contrast is impressive, especially in night sequences like the opening breakout, wherein there's excellent definition. Fleshtones appear natural throughout.
The Monaural soundmix is generally adequate, however background hiss is present in several scenes. Dialogue is always intelligible, and the score, though lacking in fidelity, is wonderful.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has included a featurette with "Behind-the-scenes" footage, and the theatrical trailer. Even more impressive is the lengthy documentary, "THE HARRYHAUSEN CHRONICLES" which is included here!
