SRP $24.98 2.35:1(16:9) DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 COLUMBIA TRISTAR

It's been over four years since this reviewer last viewed the initial dvd release of the film, and it's a welcome revisit!  In the only role Roberts has taken on where she wasn't totally annoying, other than in "CONSPIRACY THEORY", she plays a food critic.  As the film begins, she finds that a friend from her past is trying to reach her.  When she finds out he wants to apprise her of his pending wedding plans, she's even more taken aback by the fact that his fiance appears to be so incredibly sweet and perfect.  Most of the film follows Roberts' exploits to throw off the wedding plans, as she befriends the fiance and repeatedly tries to embarrass her, especially in the terrific karaoke scene, so memorable from the film!

Rupert Everett gives his best performance so far as Roberts' gay friend, whom she wants to "play" her fiancee, to look more attractive to her old friend.  Everett is really the best thing about this film and he's perfectly cast.  We really believe in his general decency, and wish these two "could" work, but realize as Everett does, some things just don't happen the way we want!  This is also P.J.(Muriel's Wedding)Hogan's best work so far. Tightly directed, and well paced, the film begs for repeat viewings!

COLUMBIA TRISTAR has released this "Special Edition" in widescreen only, and this is the only way the film should be viewed! The original 2.35:1 aspect ratio is intact with 16:9 enhancement.  When comparing the image to the one from the previous dvd release, they appear to be the same!  Both are extremely sharp looking and have a polished look!  Colors are solid and vibrant.  Fleshtones are natural throughout, and the contrast is flawless! There's no oversaturation anywhere.

The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix enjoyable but not overly aggressive. Surrounds only come on to boost the wonderful James Newton Howard score, and during the great Karaoke scene. There is some separation in the front soundstage for atmospheric effects.  Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.

Being a "Special Edition", the supplements are a little disappointing! To begin with, there's no commentary from "anyone" at all!  We'd have liked to hear Hogan, or someone from the cast at least!
Instead, the supplementary materials consist purely of "featurettes".

"UNVEILED:MAKING OF MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING" is pretty much fluff, although we do learn some surprises concerning the film's originally intended ending. An example of one ending is even revealed in a snippet.

"WEDDING DO'S AND DONT'S" is totally useless, consisting of horrendous footage set to commentary on how to prepare for the correct wedding.

"ON THE SET" looks like a "BEHIND-THE-SCENES" type of special.  Consisting mostly of various interviews, there is at least "some" behind-the-scenes footage, at least, to satisfy fans.

"MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING ALBUM" is actually an impressive featurette, and sadly it's far too brief.  In it, we venture to various filming locations and are enlightened as to what events are taking place there.

Trailers for "MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING", "IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU", and "ABOUT LAST NIGHT" are featured.
