While not nearly as funny as "DEFENDING YOUR LIFE" or "LOST IN
AMERICA," "MOTHER" has some great comedic moments, and while its
theme grows tiresome by the film's ending, it's still fine entertainment.
Albert Brooks plays a screenwriter trying to comprehend the root cause of his
problematic relationships. He's been divorced twice and believes that his
own dysfunctional relationship with his mother is to blame. To better
understand this, he decides to move back home with her for a while and test his
hypothesis, hoping to find a remedy. The initial "move" provides
the film's best moments. Brooks' methodology at restoring his child/parent
relationship is hilarious! He even restores his room to its
"dated" and corny look, with bad rock posters and more!
Debbie Reynolds gives one of her finest performances as his mother, Mrs.
Henderson. There's also a great tribute of sorts to "THE
GRADUATE" with a take-off of the "MRS. ROBINSON"
song used cleverly while he drives on towards the "past" that awaits
him!
PARAMOUNT has provided the film's original 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16:9
enhancement for this transfer. The color values are strong and there's no
oversaturation or artifacts. Fleshtones appear natural throughout.
Unfortunately, the contrast isn't as fine-tuned as what was achieved on
laserdisc, lacking detail in some of the darkest scenes. In fact, much of
the film appears darker, overall, than the laserdisc version.
The film's soundtrack is a major improvement over the laserdisc version.
While it's not an aggressive soundtrack, like "ARMAGEDDON," the dolby
digital 5.1 sound mix, offers terrific musical engulfment of the viewer, crucial
to the film's atmosphere in many scenes. There are a few
directional effects, with a sparing use of surrounds, but it doesn't hurt
the film's enjoyment. The film's theatrical trailer is included with 16:9
enhancement.
