While WARNER BROS. has been releasing some magnificent dvd presentations of recent theatrical films, we're pleasantly surprised they're still continuing to release quality transfers of buried treasures, such as is with the case of "MILDRED PIERCE."
For newer audiences unfamiliar with Joan Crawford, there's arguably no finer example of her talent than in her academy award winning performance as the title character. "MILDRED PIERCE" is a perfect example of why some film history professors long for the studios of long ago. Back then, they were able to push through many more releases, and still have a high proportion of them stand out as gems! "MILDRED PIERCE" is a gem! It looks, feels, and plays like a classic film! It's even told in flashback, but unlike many current films employing this technique, in "MILDRED PIERCE," it actually works!
Joan Crawford plays a hard-working mother, who's always sacrificed for her children, and particularly for a horribly unappreciative daughter, Veda(Ann Blyth). After going through a divorce, Mildred finds the strength and courage to work her way up from a waitress position to eventually becoming an owner! Along the way, she embodies the idea of the "American dream." Mildred doesn't resort to crooked ways to get ahead. And, it's easy to root for her from beginning to end. The script is loosely based on a James M. Cain novel, but there have been numerous changes, all for the better!
WARNER BROS. has preserved the film's correct full-frame aspect ratio, and it looks magnificent! The image is nearly flawless! There are no artifacts to be found, and the wonderful cinematography has been perfectly captured in this polished transfer. Blacks and grays are perfectly delineated, making the image even crisper.
WARNER BROS has presented the film with a Dolby Digital mono track. There is no background hiss, and the fidelity is expansive enough to present Max Steiner's score at its best. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
WARNER BROS. has included "JOAN CRAWFORD: THE ULTIMATE MOVIE STAR," a rather extensive documentary, on the opposite side of the disc. Originally produced for TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES, it's terrific, and not to be missed! There are plenty of interviews with almost everyone of any real significance to Ms. Crawford. This is a well-researched program, offering great insight, and never failing to entertain.
WARNER BROS. has also included nine trailers for other Joan Crawford films.
