"MATING HABITS OF THE EARTHBOUND HUMAN" is a mockumentary, which in spite of some horrible reviews, manages to be worthwhile, at least in spots. David Hyde Pierce narrates what satirically attempts to be something like a "Discovery Channel" production exploring the sexuality of men and women in a scientific way. This gimmicky approach is sometimes funny, but it can also be heavy-handed and even overbearing at times. Fans of Carmen Electra will certainly enjoy seeing her here, and she looks as beautiful as she's ever been. There's even a really quick scene of nudity as she runs to jump on her boyfriend while naked.
While some may like the humor, still more may find it gratuitous. In a scene wherein Ms. Electra performs oral sex on her boyfriend, the narrator states, "the female then tastes the sperm to determine its efficacy for bearing children...." Get the point???
The film was made years ago and shelved away. While it's never
hilarious, there are some pretty funny scenes, sporadically throughout the film.
The funniest running gag is a blatant but effective rip-off of the men dressed
as sperm cells sequence from Woody Allen's "Everything You Always Wanted to Know
About Sex But Were Afraid To Ask."
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has actually provided a pretty slick looking transfer for this release. Colors are rich, and there's excellent depth in every scene. Contrast allows deep blacks and grays for impressive detail in darker scenes. Fleshtones appear natural throughout.
The Dolby Surround mix is restrained, offering a few directional effects for the front soundstage. Surrounds are non-existent. Dialogue is always intelligible and free from distortion.
An audio commentary with the film's director/writer is included. While Mr. Abugov offers some interesting tidbits about the film's production, it's generally ho-hum, and non-involving.
Trailers for other films are included.
