SRP $19.98 2.35:1 MONO WELLSPRING

Director Nicolas Roeg's "THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH" showcases the visual style and editing techniques that his films have always been associated with. However, unlike all of his other films, this one's actually, in spite of its audaciousness, extremely poignant!

David Bowie plays an alien going by the name of Jerome Newton.  As the film opens he's just landed on earth. He's assumed the role of a human, motivated to provide certain inventions that will ensure him enough wealth to buy and transport large amounts of water back to his home planet, where his family is dying from a lack thereof, and save them.

Unfortunately, there are more than enough nefarious businessmen looking to literally rob and ruin him, and destroy his good intentions.  Buck Henry is great in a supporting role, but David Bowie really shines in the lead, bringing an empathy and believability to his role from beginning to end. There are spots in need of tighter editing, but overall, it's a well-paced, provocative film that will leave audiences with something to talk about long after it's ended.

WELLSPRING has provided the correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio for this release. Unfortunately, it's without 16:9 enhancement.  The colors are more solid and vibrant than we'd expected.  There's no oversaturation, but great depth to every image, some of which have complicated color schemes.  Contrast is also impressive, with deep blacks and grays, allowing for clarity in darker sequences. Fleshtones appear natural throughout.

WELLSPRING has provided the original monaural track, which is fine.  Although it's limited in fidelity, there's no apparent distortion, and dialogue is always intelligible.
