ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT has released one of my favorite films from my
childhood, “MAD MONSTER PARTY.” Before the advent of videotape recorders, my
childhood friends would almost be jumping with anticipation for the television
airing of this film.
The film is a Rankin-Bass production, utilizing the puppet animation they’ve
made famous with such Holiday favorites as “FROSTY THE SNOWMAN,” and “RUDOLPH
THE RED NOSED REINDEER.”
When Baron Frankenstein announced his retirement from the “WORLDWIDE
ORGANIZATION OF MONSTERS”, his assistant, Francesca, invite a wide variety of
members together for his departure, as well as the unveiling of his newest “mad”
creation. Kids of all ages are certain to love seeing the Wolf Man, the Mummy,
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and many more monstrous characters. Also invited, is
Frankenstein’s only living relative, his nephew, Felix. Felix is a nervous
pharmacy clerk, made even more nervous by the amorous intentions of the
beautiful Francesca.
All of the monsters are competing for the Baron’s secrets, and the confusion and
mayhem that ensues, is often funny. There’s a real sense of nostalgia for
adults, as we get to hear such talents as Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller in
lead roles.
ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT has provided the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio for this
transfer. Unlike the previously available VHS version, this one was made from
the original 35mm master, and the results are impressive. The colors values
are solid throughout! Colors are always vibrant, and there’s no oversaturation.
Contrast is also excellent, with deep blacks and grays. There is some minor
grain, but it’s overshadowed by an altogether outstanding image.
The DOLBY DIGITAL MONO track is impressive in spite of the films’ age. While
fidelity is limited, dialogue was always intelligible and free from distortion.
There are a few musical sequences, which sounded fine, and were free from
background noise.
A 24 page booklet is included offering production information and images. “MAD
MONSTER PARTY” is great family fun, and would make a wonderful gift for any
child during the holidays.
