Few history classes discuss the story of Joan/Juana of Castile, daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.
The film, loosely based on fact, describes the tragic circumstances surrounding Joan's descent into madness. In an arranged marriage, Joan became the wife to the Archduke of Austria, Philip the Handsome. The film manages to create real empathy for Joan, an 18 year old virgin smitten with the Archduke before even meeting him. The two actually marry the same day they meet! While Joan expects a world of love, honor and unbridled passion, Philips passion is for other women and power. In spite of the political mechanizations of the marriage, the two have enough passion for one another to produce six children. Joan, deeply in love with Philip, is pushed to emotional duress just trying to deal with his constant adultery. Philip, without any concerns for her feelings, carries on with women in their own court! When Philip decides she stands in the way of his desire to become King, he has her declared insane.
While some of the supporting cast may "overact" in a few scenes, Pilar Lopez is outstanding! She is believable in every scene, and it's due to her great acting ability that the flaws of lesser actors are more easily revealed.
"MAD LOVE" offers an interesting, "somewhat" true account of a historical episode, that has been greatly overlooked. At times, it tends to stray too much towards "soap opera" atmosphere, but it also has outstanding production values, and entertains!
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has preserved the film's 2.35:1 aspect ratio with 16:9 enhancement. It's an excellent transfer! The colors are bold, complimenting the exotic settings, and bringing great depth to every scene. Contrast is excellent, with deep blacks and grays. Fleshtones appear natural.
COLUMBIA TRISTAR has presented a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, which while not overly aggressive, is still impressive. Surrounds are used minimally, except to boost the wonderful score. There are a variety of directional effects focused towards the front soundstage. Dialogue is always intelligible and free of distortion.
There are several trailers included.
