There's not much here to offer. The plot revolves around a young girl searching
for her unknown "sperm-donor" father. While the film makers must have
believed that when this black girl finds out her father is "white" Ted Danson,
sides would split with laughter, they couldn't have been more wrong. There's little
funny in this script. The picture looks extremely sharp, and nothing appears to
be lost, suggesting this film was shot with a soft matte, allowing for more picture
information to be visible than originally intended. The dolby surround mix utilizes
directional effects sparingly but with creativity.

"Stroker Ace" is another one of our "Guilty Pleasures". While
Director Hal Needham has little directorial skill or appreciation for cinematography, his
"folksy" attitude serves him well in presenting this small comedy with a sense
of undeniable charm. Reynolds is also quite good as a NASCAR driver tricked into
promoting a chicken outfit, typically in a costume, after signing a contract without
reading it. The script, by Hugh Wilson, is quite funny, and this serves well even
after repeated viewings. The picture quality is adequate, with fine color and
contrast, although the detail found in higher priced WARNER BROS dvds is missing.
The mono sound is fine.

Where did the 80s go? In the midst of all the educational and social issues
taking place, does anyone remember the tale of Joe Clark, the principal who took education
and school safety into his own hands, with a bat! Morgan Freeman gives another of
his fine performances in thie title role. Director John Avildsen is unable to give
the film the inspiring underdog feel he achieved with "Rocky" but the film's
still worth seeing for Freeman alone. The picture looks fine, with excellent
contrast apparent in every scene. This is no easy accomplishment due to the gritty
feel Avildsen likes to create in all of his films. The Dolby Surround sound offers
little in the way of directional effects, although it comes in handy in boosting the
energetic feel of some of the song selections.

"Lovesick" is one of those rare comedies which may find its rightful audience
due to new exposure on DVD. Writer/director Marshall Brickman brings out an equally
rare "good" performance from star Dudley Moore as a psychiatrist in love with
his patient, Elizabeth McGovern. The comedy rarely matches what Brickman
accomplished with "Annie Hall", but that's a tall order. The picture
quality is fair, with excellent fleshtones but only adequate contrast. The mono
sound is fine.
