"LOST BOYS "

The DVD version of "The Lost Boys" is a major improvement over the laserdisc version in two significant ways, sight & sound!  The previous laserdisc version was poorly letterboxed, looking slightly better than 1.85:1 when in reality it's a 2.35:1 film.  The correct aspect ratio is retained on one side of the dvd, the P&S version on another side.  WARNER BROS has also encoded the DVD with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.  Unlike the vampires, the soundtrack is very much alive, with almost continuous directional, atmospheric effects.  The image is extremely sharp and colorful on both sides, although the letterboxed version is slightly more vibrant, and the compositions achieved here make this the absolute preference.

"LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS"

This version of  "The Little Shop of Horrors" has been recalled.   Apparently David Geffen didn't want the unfinished b/w mono footage comprising the alternate ending provided due to the fact that there is supposed to be decent color footage with proper sound.  While this would be the "preferred version", the DVD at hand has excellent transfer quality.  The production design calls for a wide range of color schemes, all of which look splendid in this transfer.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound adds depth to the music, but little to directional effects offered in standard pro-logic surround.

"ABOVE THE LAW"
11786 $24.98 C/S/D UPC 085391178620 1.85:1 P&S 99 Min WARNER DOLBY DIGITAL

Steven Seagal's first film, "Above the Law" is one of his best.  Well directed and written, it offers as much in plot as it does action.  With sub-plots above sub-plots, the C.I.A, covert ops, etc. this one keeps you guessing and interested throughout its short running time.

The transfer looks fine, although it doesn't have the depth achieved with "Hard To Kill", perhaps due to the higher amount of  night scenes.  The enhanced Dolby Digital 5.1 sound adds to the action sequences with more vibrant bass and directional effects.

"HARD TO KILL"
11914 $24.98 C/S/D UPC 085391191421 1.85:1 P&S 96 Min WARNER DOLBY DIGITAL

Although "Hard To Kill" doesn't offer the same quality writing and direction found in "Above the Law", it looks better, with sharp, vibrant colors in every scene.  Again, the plot having Seagal awakening from a coma after many years, leaves much to be desired.  Everything here's pretty standard and predictable.  Still, one can't help but enjoy the well choreographed fight scenes and Kelly LeBrock's on hand to add even more to the visual quality.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound offers an array of directional effects, and is greatly improved upon over the standard pro-logic.
